The soul purification bathing ritual is commonly in Tirta Empul, Tampak Siring. The most crowded Balinese people do this ritual when in holiday and in the full-moon (Purnama in Balinese) or in the new moon (Tilem in Balinese). It’s believe that by do a bathing ritual will clean and purify our soul from the negative influences and dirty soul.
Tirtha Empul is an holy spring water temple located in Tampak Siring Village, Gianyar Regency and it is about 40 km eastwards from Denpasar. It is set in the dale and encircled by the hill. In the west side of this temple, there is an Indonesian President palace which has been found by the first president of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno.
The name of Tirtha Empul temple is taken in a inscription which is kept at Sakenan Temple, Manukaya village, Sub district of Tampak Siring, about 3 km from Tirta Empul Temple. In this inscription, the Tirta Empul is named by the Tirta Ri Air Hampul and then the name has changed into Tirta Hampul and finally become the Tirta Empul. Tirtha Ri air hampul is meaning the water sprayed or the holy pool (Petirthan) which is the water emerge from the land.
There are other places to do the same purification ritual in Bali such as; Pura Tirta Sudamala in Bangli, Pura Dalem Pingit Sebatu in Tegallalang, Pura Selukat in Keramas Village and also some other places.
